I was riding my bike to school when I heard an extremely loud sound behind me. I turned around and there was a Mercedes-Benz that resembled a 190, and it dashed by me at around 120 mph in a 25 mph zone. It accelerated extremely quickly, sounded like a V10/V12. Might have been a boxer 10. A very unique sound. Any help with car? It had four circular headlights, and it WAS a Mercedes. After identification of the car, I will move on to engine. Thanks!
Update: It was a W123!
Now, the engine. Anybody know about a V10 or V12 in a W123?

120 mph in a 25 mph zone

I'm not saying it wasn't 120, but do you have any idea how fast 120 would look from a bike in a 25 zone?

I couldn’t believe my eyes.

190E or 190SL or 190 Ponton?

Yes. I have watched a rocket car reach 400 mph in person. I know speed well.

So you’ve seen a rocket car go fast (from a far distance), therefore you can judge speed very well? I’m sorry, this is just a big pet peeve of mine.

I have no clue what it was. It was loud and sounded sort of like a wankel.

So that’s what he’s doing these days.... Horizontally opposed 10-rotor engine in a 190... sounds neat

Four circular headlights, are you sure it wasn’t a V8?

There is so much gold in this post and comments I don’t even know which part is my favorite

I once saw an F-18 break the sound barrier in person, therefore I can judge the airspeed of a Cessna 152 from a distance.

on a side note, we need to make a post addressing exactly what SE is. a lot of people seem confused as to what exactly it is, and why the content needs a home outside of Oppo.

Eh, I’ve broken 70 in a 30 zone. If I hadn’t seen flashing lights behind me I would’ve gotten another gear and 100+. And then I would have probably gone to jail.

Can’t be a Merc, then. What about a Bentley Turbo R?

SL? With an engine swap perhaps.

If it had 4 circular headlights it wasn't a 190e. I've never heard of a flat 10, maybe a m120 swapped e class

You sure it wasn’t the Martin Brundle-approved 190e Cosworth?

It was a boxy 4-door

Wrong, this was 1001% definitely it. Trust me, I know speed well.

M-B didn’t have V12s or V10s in the W123 from the factory. Largest engine you got in a 123 body was an M110 2.8L straight six, or a OM617 3.0L straight five diesel.
You may have had the 6.9L V8 in a W116 450SEL 6.9. But those are rare. The other V8 was the 4.5L M117.
The W116s are very similar to the W123 body.
W116
W123

Wrong, it was boxy and it had headlights side-by-side
![]() 03/01/2016 at 12:49 |

It was a W123 with a removed bumper & grille and a custom engine

find a video of that 5 pot diesel with the exhaust rusted off/missing. I would give that the best chance of being the strange sound he heard. Not sure it is capable of much speed, but lets assume 120 was an gross exaggeration

Don’t think you will find it, there are a lot of tuned W123s around.
